About the Role
Reporting to the Head of Cooperatives, the Business Development Manager - Cooperatives role will spearhead growth of insurance business through cooperatives and SACCOs by identifying opportunities, developing strategic partnerships, driving sales, expanding distribution channels, and building strong relationships that increase penetration of insurance products within the cooperative movement.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Business Growth & Sales
- Assist to develop and implement business development strategies targeting cooperatives, SACCOs, farmers’ associations, trade unions, microfinance institutions, and related member-based organizations.
- Prospect, pitch, and onboard new cooperatives to distribute Life, General, Health, Microinsurance, Crop/Livestock, and other relevant insurance solutions.
- Consistently achieve assigned sales targets, premium growth objectives, and market share goals for the cooperative segment.
- Assist to design and execute sales action plans to increase product uptake and drive sustainable premium growth.
- Maintain and monitor an active sales pipeline, ensuring consistent conversion and revenue generation.
- Assist to review cooperative portfolio performance and recommend corrective or growth-focused interventions.
- Facilitate proposal submissions, member registrations, underwriting documentation, policy issuance, and renewals.
- Assist to Implement retention strategies to maintain a minimum of 95% renewal retention across all cooperative accounts.
- Deliver product training to cooperative leaders, field officers, agents, and partner teams.
- Prepare accurate quotations and ensure delivery within approved turnaround times.
Relationship Management
- Build, nurture, and sustain long-term relationships with cooperative boards, management teams, and key decision-makers.
- Conduct routine client visits, service review meetings, and structured feedback sessions.
- Resolve client concerns—including claims, service gaps, and product inquiries—promptly and professionally.
- Coordinate and deliver product knowledge sessions, financial literacy awareness, and member education programs for cooperatives.
- Serve as a senior point of support to regional teams on complex cooperative opportunities.
Strategic Coordination & Implementation
- Assist to support planning and execution of MOU-driven programs and cooperative partnership initiatives.
- Coordinate with regional and branch teams to implement campaigns, activations, and market engagement activities.
- Assist to maintain a cooperative events calendar and ensure maximum brand visibility during meetings, AGMs, trainings, and member gatherings.
- Ensure end-to-end coordination of cooperative forums, exhibitions, and outreach events.
Marketing, Branding & Sponsorship Support
- Assist to evaluate sponsorship and partnership proposals from cooperatives and recommend viable opportunities aligned with business strategy.
- Assist to prepare business cases for cooperative events, bids, sponsorships, and marketing initiatives requiring management approval.
- Assist to coordinate branding, booth setups, promotional materials, and marketing collateral for cooperative activations.
- Support digital and mobile insurance promotion to enhance accessibility and uptake among cooperative members.
Product Development & Customization
- Collaborate with underwriting, actuarial, and product development teams to design and customize insurance solutions for cooperative groups.
- Identify emerging risks, member needs, and market trends and recommend product enhancements or new solutions.
- Provide data-driven insights to improve product relevance and competitiveness within the cooperative sector.
Business Intelligence & Reporting
- Assist to gather and analyze data on cooperative performance, GWP trends, renewal behavior, and product uptake patterns.
- Track key metrics such as new business acquisition, partner engagement levels, and event ROI.
- Prepare periodic reports, dashboards, and presentations for management and cooperative partners.
Channel & Partnership Expansion
- Develop and support agency, broker, and micro-agent distribution channels operating within cooperative structures.
- Establish and strengthen partnerships with cooperative federations, farmers’ unions, apex bodies, and microfinance networks.
Who We’re Looking For
Academic & Professional Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in insurance, Business Administration, Marketing, or a related discipline.
- Professional insurance qualification such as ACII, CII, Diploma in Insurance
Experience
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience

- Strong sales and negotiation skills.
- Understanding of cooperative business models and microfinance structures.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to analyze data, prepare proposals, and develop business strategies.
