About the Role
Reporting to the Underwriting Manager, the Assistant Underwriter – General Insurance (Uganda) will support the underwriting function by assisting in risk assessment, policy processing, and documentation for general insurance business, ensuring accuracy, compliance with underwriting guidelines, and timely service delivery.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Underwriting Support & Risk Assessment
- Assist in underwriting general insurance risks in line with approved guidelines and authority limits
- Support assessment of risks across classes such as Motor, Fire, Marine, Medical, Engineering, and Liability
- Collect, review, and verify proposal forms, risk details, and supporting documentation
Policy Processing & Documentation
- Prepare quotations, policy schedules, endorsements, and renewals
- Ensure accurate data entry into underwriting systems
- Maintain proper filing of underwriting documents and records
Pricing & Data Accuracy
- Apply approved rates, terms, deductibles, and discounts as guided
- Ensure accuracy of premiums, sums insured, and policy conditions
- Flag pricing or risk anomalies for review by senior underwriters
Compliance & Controls
- Ensure adherence to underwriting guidelines, internal controls, and regulatory requirements
- Support AML, KYC, and customer due diligence processes
- Assist during internal and external audits by providing required documentation
Reinsurance & Risk Referrals
- Prepare underwriting referrals for risks exceeding delegated authority
- Support facultative reinsurance placements by compiling required risk information
Stakeholder Support
- Liaise with Sales, Brokers, and Customer Service teams on underwriting requirements
- Support Claims with underwriting documentation and policy clarifications
Reporting & Monitoring
- Assist in monitoring portfolio performance, loss trends, and exposure reports
- Prepare basic underwriting and management reports as required
- Track renewal timelines, retention rates, and lapse ratios
- Prepare renewal reports and dashboards for management review
- Flag trends affecting portfolio profitability or risk quality
Retention & Service Excellence
- Support retention of profitable accounts through timely renewals and accurate documentation
- Liaise with Sales and Brokers to address renewal queries and negotiations
- Ensure minimal lapses due to delays or errors
Renewal Processing & Portfolio Management
- Manage assigned renewal portfolios across general insurance classes (Motor, Fire, Medical, Marine, Engineering, Liability, etc.)
- Review expiring policies and prepare renewal quotations within agreed timelines
- Ensure accurate policy data, sums insured, and coverage terms are updated
Who We’re Looking For
Academic & Professional Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Insurance, Business Administration, Actuarial Science, Economics, or a related discipline.
- Professional insurance qualification such as ACII, CII, Diploma in Insurance, or equivalent is an added advantage.
Experience
- Minimum of 3 years’ underwriting experience in the General Insurance sector,

- Ability to analyse claims experience and portfolio performance
- Proficiency in underwriting systems and MS Excel
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
